Protect a Young Texan from Head Injury

Support TMA’s Hard Hats for Little Heads

DONATE NOW

Have you noticed more Texans biking since the COVID-19 pandemic emerged last year?

Many are young Texans who need a helmet to stay safe in the event of an accident while riding. Since 1994, TMA’s Hard Hats for Little Heads (HHLH) has provided youth free helmets and safety education. YOU can Make-A-Difference in the life of a young cyclist with a gift that will help TMAF win a challenge grant of $10,500—all for HHLH!

Who Benefits?
Annually, upwards of 30,000 little Texans are protected thanks donors who support HHLH and volunteers who host and carry out the program in their communities. Community based events that provide free helmets, such as Hard Hats, can increase the odds of a child wearing a helmet four-fold, according to Safe Kids Worldwide.

What is the Make-A-Difference Campaign?
Since 2012, a generous TMA and TMA Alliance member couple have offered a $10,500 gift if TMAF donors can at least match that amount. TMAF’s campaign to secure this challenge grant is called “Make-A-Difference.” On average, the funds raised through this campaign support 25 percent or more of the annual costs to carry out HHLH.

More about HHLH
The Texas Medical Association’s Hard Hats for Little Heads (HHLH) bicycle helmet giveaway program was created in 1994 at the recommendation of a TMA member who recognized the power of TMA and TMAA members joining  with the community to help reduce head injury among Texas children.

Since then more than 360,000 free helmets and safety education have been provided to Texas youth thanks to physician, alliance and medical student volunteers and their community collaborators who host local events.

Helmets are distributed at community events hosted by TMA physicians, TMA Alliance members (spouses and partners of physicians), and Texas medical students. Young people and their parents learn how to properly fit and wear the helmet and are asked to sign a pledge card  signifying they will wear the helmet every time they ride.

Hard Hats community events include bike safety rodeos, school fitness competitions, and health and safety fairs, and frequently are held in collaboration with schools, churches, civic groups, not-for-profit youth groups, fire/police/EMS and others.
